RIO Ambassador Series Phil Rowley Lake Line AquaLux

by RIO
Price $134.95

The RIO Phil Rowley AquaLux is a stillwater-specific intermediate sinking line built for anglers who like to fish long leaders—and don't want their line-to-leader connection getting in the way.

Based on RIO's proven AquaLux taper and developed with stillwater specialist Phil Rowley, this version adds an integrated tippet ring to the front of the fly line. That small change makes a big difference when you're fishing the long leaders commonly used for chironomids, leeches, and other stillwater presentations.

The clear intermediate head sinks at 1.5–2 inches per second, making it an excellent choice for working the upper portion of the water column without immediately dropping your fly into the depths.

The Long-Leader Advantage

If you've ever tried to bring a long stillwater leader through a traditional loop-to-loop connection, you already know the frustration.

The integrated tippet ring eliminates that bulky connection and gives you a much cleaner leader-to-line junction. It slides through the rod guides smoothly, including when you're bringing a long leader inside the guides to land a fish.

That's a small detail until you're sitting in the boat with fish around you and realize you need a different line.

Fishing the First Few Feet

The AquaLux is designed to fish in the first 2–6 feet of the water column, making it particularly useful when trout are cruising or feeding relatively close to the surface.

It's a great line for:

  • chironomids
  • leeches
  • small to medium streamers
  • damsel and dragonfly patterns
  • searching patterns in the upper water column

The clear head also provides a stealthy presentation when you're fishing clear water and spooky fish.

The short, 30-foot head is another advantage. It loads the rod quickly, requires fewer false casts, and makes it easier to get the line out when you're working from a boat or float tube. RIO pairs it with a slick translucent-green running line to help maximize distance.

Built for Stillwater

This isn't a general-purpose intermediate line that happens to work on lakes. The AquaLux was designed with stillwater anglers in mind.

For Saskatchewan anglers, that makes a lot of sense. There are plenty of days when the fish aren't on the bottom, but a floating line isn't getting your fly deep enough. The AquaLux fills that gap beautifully.

It's especially effective when you want to:

  • get below the surface film
  • maintain contact with your fly
  • fish a consistent shallow depth
  • or cover water with a slow retrieve

And because the line is intermediate rather than a faster-sinking full-sink, you can still fish relatively slowly without immediately burying your fly.

Why We Like It at Purity Fly Co

  • 1.5–2 ips intermediate sink rate
  • Clear 30-foot sinking head
  • Designed to fish approximately 2–6 feet deep
  • Integrated tippet ring makes long-leader connections much easier
  • Short head loads quickly and casts efficiently
  • Excellent for chironomids, leeches, and shallow-water streamers
  • SlickCast coating for smooth, durable performance

If you're fishing stillwater with long leaders and want to work the upper part of the water column, the RIO Phil Rowley AquaLux is a line that just makes sense.

It's a proven stillwater taper with one very smart addition: a connection that doesn't fight your leader.
